Bio:

Sam is an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Sam is exploring how we might augment human creativity while preserving human autonomy and dignity.

Sam began his career in design studying Architecture at the University of Cambridge, where he evaluated and developed frameworks for analysing the psychological, social and material impact of architecture within the built environment. Sam holds a MSc in Computer Science at Imperial College London where he explored visualisation techniques for mechanistic interpretability. Sam is a co-founder of Turinglab –an online learning platform that has reached over 500,000 students internationally helping educators teach kids to code.

Sam has also worked on developing human-in-the-loop AI systems for co-creating educational content and has consulted in machine learning for publishing and behavioural insights startups

PhD research:

Sam is investigating Human-AI Co-Creation, aiming to establish foundational principles and technologies for fluent, trustworthy and meaningful creative partnerships between humans and AI.

These are the research questions he is interested in exploring:

The Ethics of Creative Influence: How can we design systems to be inspiring without homogenising creative output? What does authorship and intellectual property look like in co-created works?

Designing for Shared Agency: How can we design interfaces that support fluid back-and-forth human-AI interactions? What are the building blocks of collaborative dialogue?

Managing Trust and Opacity: How do we design XAI that can provide explanations that are genuinely useful and understandable? How do we help users develop a healthy, calibrated level of trust with AI systems?

Evaluating Co-Creative Systems: How do we know what good human-AI collaboration looks like? What does creative synergy, user-satisfaction and empowerment mean in this context?
